"Governance capability" most popular catchphrase in China in 2004


"Governance capability" was the most popular expression in mainstream Chinese newspapers during 2004, according to a recent linguistic survey.

The survey, conducted by a special research group under the Beijing Language University and supported by several other departments, analyzed 14 mainstream Chinese newspapers - including People's Daily, China Youth Daily, Economic Daily, Global Times and Beijing Youth Daily -- to find the most frequently used expressions.

The computer analysis of 490,000,000 words found "Governance capability" was the most commonly used followed by "Athens Olympics";

"Liu Xiang", the Chinese gold medalist in men's 110m hurdle in Athens Olympic Games;

"audit storm", the nationwide auditing campaign on major governmental departments; and "scientific concept on development".

Filling up the rest of the top ten list were "zero tariff";

"allowance for land-losing farmers", a measure adopted by the central government to subsidize farmers who lost lands during the urbanization process;

"Anti-secession Law";

"Chinese-French Culture Years", the year-long cultural celebration to promote France in China;

and Tsunami.

The research group also published the ten most popular expressions in domestic politics, international politics, economic affairs, cultural affairs, science and technology, and accidents.

The most popular expressions in domestic political reports included "audit storm", "human-centered principle", "amendment to constitution", "food safety", "power shortage" and "sex ratio imbalance".

In international political reports some of the most common expressions were "Bush's re-election", "death of Yasser Arafat", "American troops abusing Iraqis", "EU's Chinese arms embargo", "six-party talks on Korean Peninsula" and "Ukraine election".

Among the ten most popular expressions in domestic economic reports were "market economy status", "economic census", "Chinese PC giant Lenovo purchasing IBM PC", "RMB interest rate rise" and "supporting policy to Chinese stock markets".

The "Chinese-French Culture Years", "network copyright", "blog","film rating system", "artificial beauty", "Chinese martial arts epic", and "World Carnival" were some of the most common expressions in cultural reports.

Most popular expressions in science and technology reports included "SARS inactivated vaccine", "genetically-modified food", "Mars exploration" and China's moon probe "Chang'e project".

The most popular expressions in accident reports included "tsunami in South and Southeastern Asia", "Russian hostage crisis and Chinese hostage crisis in Pakistan", "bird flu", "air crash in Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region", "bomb in Madrid", "rampant coal mine accidents in China", "computer virus" (Worm-Sassar), "forest fire in Dahinggan Mountains", "boat sinking in Yellow River" and "land slide".

According to the group, the ten most popular expressions in 2002 included "Yao Ming", "World Soccer Cup", "anti-terror campaign", "short message service" and "auto sales boom" while in 2003 the top ten included "SARS", "Iraq War", "Shenzhou spaceship","building a well-off society", "Three Gorges Reservoir Project" and "new Chinese leadership".
