Author's Foreword to the 1935 Edition
This series of five lectures was delivered in the spring of 1934 at International House in Chicago, and was repeated, with slight changes, for a small group of American and British friends at Yenching in the winter of the same year.
My colleague, Miss Grace M. Boynton of the Department of English, suggested numerous changes in the manuscript and assisted in reading the proof. Without her painstaking cooperation, I should not have ventured to publish these lectures.
